I was a sorcerer in AD&D. Here I hope to be interesting--at least to someone.

Presidential Oversight or Ingenuous Citizenry?

In the last 6 years, we’ve seen President Bush lie to us nearly constantly. In spite of his clear intentions to defraud the populace, nothing has been done to hold him accountable. In President Clinton’s terms of office, our government hounded him throughout his reign, until one single lie led to an impeachment. Yet, here we have a President whose mouth exudes hundreds—if not thousands—of lies, and nothing is done about it.

What has happened to us? Are “We The People” so wrapped up in our own individual problems that we have failed to see the larger problem? When are we going to hold our leadership responsible for their actions?

In all probability, we never will.

We are a very trusting people. We seem to be unable to look at our government and demand the way of life that we ourselves have always expected from that government. We go to all the trouble to elect the government membership to their respective offices, and once they’ve taken the job, we sit back on our collective asses and let them do whatever they want—whether it is in our best interest or theirs.

Mind, there’s a very small percentage of the citizenry that actually makes an effort to force the government to work for the people; but often they are so focused on their own single interests that the effort is essentially ignored—the number of people is too small for the government to begin worrying about itself.

That’s basically the reason the government functions at all; the politicians are worrying about their positions, and will only act if they find those positions threatened. These days, they hardly have to worry at all. The President has created an atmosphere of distrust among us. He’s arranged things such that if anyone speaks out against the current government, they will be marked as “un-American”, and “dangerous to the welfare of the United States”. At that point, the credibility of the speaker goes right down the toilet.

We, as a nation, need to get up off those fat fannies and do something about this. We need to take active roles in how we let our government function. Remember, they work for us, not the other way around. We need to think more about the country as a whole, rather than our own special interests. This country was created on the concept of “all men are created equal”, which means we should all have the same rights; “privileges” shouldn’t exist for anyone.
